Özet:

The companies with employees who have humor capability and an innovation climate have been observed to have high creative skills. In order to foster creativity, it is crucial that organizations learn how to make use of humor in order to achieve organizational objectives, create an innovation climate that enables humorous communication and promote positive humor avoiding the dark side of humor at workplace. This study aims to address how different styles of humor affect creativity and how innovation climate at the universities moderates this relationship. Accordingly, constructs were analysed to put forth which humor styles affect creativity positively, which of the humor styles negatively, how innovation climate contributes to foster humor styles and creativity in the organization and how the outcome of this study could be used in terms of improving organizational performance and effectiveness. In the research, the behavior of academic staff from public and private universities in Turkey was taken into consideration. Correlation, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis utilizing structural equation modelling and hierarchical regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. As suggested in the hypotheses, it was found out that while self-enhancing and affiliative humor styles are positively related to academics’ creativity, aggressive humor style is negatively related to academics’ creativity. However, self-defeating humor style is not significantly related to creativity as argued and innovation climate partially moderates the relationship between humor styles and creativity.
