Özet

Carbon dioxide (CO2) has emerged as a green and sustainable cooling medium in advanced machining due to its excellent heat transfer properties and reduced environmental impact. This study presents a comprehensive investigation on the effects of different cooling and lubrication conditions i.e. dry cutting, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), air cooling and CO2-assisted cryogenic cooling (Cryo) on the surface characteristics of machined additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Milling tests were carried out under different cutting conditions to generate surfaces with distinct topographical features. Then, the machined surfaces were characterised using high-resolution non-contact coherence-scanning interferometry, and the acquired data was analyzed by profile, areal, volumetric and 3D topography parameters. The findings show that CO2-assisted machining improves surface quality and functional surface characteristics compared with traditional cooling methods. The detailed topographical analysis also reveals that areal and volumetric parameters are more sensitive for identifying localised surface irregularities, material distribution characteristics, peak-valley morphology, and functional load-bearing features that are not fully captured by traditional profile roughness parameters. Lastly, the findings demonstrate the effectiveness of CO2-assisted cryogenic cooling as a sustainable cooling strategy for machining additively manufactured titanium alloys and establish a comprehensive framework for evaluating surface topography and functionality through advanced multi-parameter surface characterisation.
