ABSTRACT
The family, as one of the most fundamental and indispensable institutions in human life, plays a
central role in the physiological, psychological, and social development of the individual. However,
transformations in social, economic, political, and technological domains directly affect the family,
leading to changes and shifts in its structure, values, norms, and relationship dynamics. Despite
these changes, the essential functions of the family continue to persist, and in response to emerging
societal needs, the family also acquires new roles. As in many other societies, the family in Türkiye
has been undergoing significant structural and cultural transformation alongside the modernization
process. This study, based on data collected in 2022 through a joint investigation conducted by
Istanbul Ticaret University and AREDA Survey, analyzes the transformation of the family in Türkiye.
According to the research findings, the structure of the family, familial values, and the relationships
among family members have been experiencing considerable transformation. Although this transformation generally trends from traditional to modern, the family structure in Türkiye embodies a
hybrid model that incorporates both sets of values. While the Turkish family adopts modern norms
and values, it also strives to preserve certain traditional elements. This dual structure is particularly
evident in areas such as gender roles, the significance of official marriage, the value attributed to
children, kinship relations, and elderly care.
