Abstract

This study examines the commercial relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Italian city-states up to the seventeenth century, along the axis of the Via Egnatia, one of the most important overland trade routes of the Mediterranean world. The Ottoman Empire transformed the Via Egnatia—referred to as the “Left Wing” (Sol Kol)— into not only a military corridor but also an economic backbone through the establishment of relay stations (menzil system), fortifications, waqfs, and infrastructural investments. The study addresses the relations established by city- states such as Venice, Genoa, Florence, and Dubrovnik with the Ottoman Empire, considering not only their commercial but also their diplomatic and military dimensions. Via Egnatia can be regarded not merely as a trade route, but as an analytical framework that elucidates the spatial organization of commercial flows and the interconnections among actors, thereby explaining the continuity and transformation of Ottoman–Italian commercial relations.
