A novel method to find group velocity in metallic waveguides is presented. The conventional method is to find the derivative of the eigenvalue using right and left eigenvectors. Our method uses only the right eigenvector. This suffices because we make use of the physical properties of the parameter dependent matrix the eigenvector belongs to, and this leads to a difference in a resulting expression. Numerical computations also confirm the equivalence of the two methods. However it must be noted that our method gives a better physical insight to the problem and this may be an advantage in analytical developments. © 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
