Özet:

Coastal ecosystems are among the world’s most sensitive, threatened, and densely populated environmental systems. The abundance and quality of coastal ecosystems significantly impact marine biological processes, including primary and secondary production, which support human needs. Economic valuation of coastal ecosystems helps to identify this complexity and justify conservation efforts, potentially redirecting local attention towards sustainable coastal management. Determining the economic value of coastal ecosystem conservation has yet to be considered in Sri Lankan conservation planning.

This study estimates willingness-to-pay (WTP) for conserving coastal areas in Sri Lanka using a choice experiment. Furthermore, it aims to identify attributes and measurable variables that reflect the economic value of conserved coastal areas by evaluating public preferences over various scenarios.

A face-to-face survey (n=250) in Mirissa was analysed using a Conditional Logit Model (CLM). Top preferences included conserving all known coral reefs, a monthly contribution of LKR 500, and creating more opportunities for residents. All parameters were significant at α < 0.01. Finally, the study generated vital information on the values respondents placed on different levels of coastal resource conservation and the associated trade-offs.
