Abstract:It has long been accepted that traditional media is a significant actor in the making of foreign policy, by way of influencing, firstly, public opinion and then decision makers themselves. Yet, this fact has increasingly become a reality of the past and should be approached with great scrutiny. The media - public opinion and foreign policy interaction, which thus far has been explained with such fundamentally opposing theories as CNN Effect and the Manufacturing Consent, has entered a new era, as a new actor, namely social media, has come into play stage. This theses argues that the globally established media channels with a wide organizational network and an established corporate structure have come to lose their power over the making of foreign policy in this day and age. Putting forward the assertion that it is the emergence presence of social media which is the leading cause of this change, the following pages defend that social media platforms have managed to affect such change through its spontaneous and anonymous nature and through the mutual consent of the mass partnership. This situation has come to connect people effectively and enabled them to voice their opinion more powerfully at a global scale; as such, these vehicles are now pushing on the presumed borders of media and foreign policy even more hard. This fundamental change points to the undeniable truth of a shift in power implies a power shift from the traditional media to the masses. The popular and widely used social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are the new vehicles of change and factors of influence over foreign policy.
