Abstract:

Consumption is a social and individual economic activity as well as a socio-cultural concept. Communication tools serve as a bridge while expanding consumption and the area of activity. There was a period of time in which societies were prepared for consumption before the post modern period when consumption culture was widespread. In the context of magazine publishing, the traces of this period of revival were seen in the magazines after 1909. Based on the research regarding the relationship between media and consumption, the role of magazines published in the last period of the Ottoman Empire on the consumption culture was investigated. In this context, five journals were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The current study revealed that in the period when Yedigün and Şehbal magazines have been publicated, consumer items were mostly used in the context of culture. It was seen that the content of Ses magazine developed structurally during its publication period and it started to take form of a role model for the society. With the changing political and economic progression from 1990 to 2017, it has been understood that the consumption elements are meaning-bearers in the cultural level, and transformed into content that offers concrete products centered on individuals in every aspect of life. In this context, research has been determined both by quantitative and qualitative data that magazines have a role on consumption.
