Abstract:

Since the foundation period of the Ottoman Empire, a large number of Muslim Turkish populations were settled from Anatolia to the Balkans through the settlement policy. In the nineteenth century, the migration was reversed and changed from the Balkans to Anatolia and continued in the Republic period in parallel with the political developments. In the Balkan region, Bulgaria is one of the countries where the Turkish minority is the most populous. The situation of the minorities in this area has undergone significant changes in some periods depending on to the political relations between the two countries. Cold War era is one of these periods. The Turkish population of two hundred thousand people was forced to migrate to the Turkish territory in 1950-1951 with the necessity of compulsory emigration of the Turks of Bulgaria. Migrations continued between 1968-1978 period and in the 1984-1989 period as a product of Bulgaria's systematic policy, Turkey has faced another wave of forced migration. This study deals with the migration of the Bulgarian Turkish minority, between 1950-1951. Causes of the migration, problems during immigration, political reflections will be examined based on not only the Turkish literature and press such as Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, Ak?am, Zafer, Hürriyet newspapers, but also foreign literature and press sources as The New York Time?s.
