Abstract:

In this study, the relations of Romania and Bulgaria located in Eastern Bloc with European Union (EU) after the disintegration of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the end of the Cold War as well as the stages of EU integration process of these countries were analyzed. In the first chapter, information about theories explaining the integration in the field of international relations was provided and the subject of the study was examined through existing theories. In the second chapter, the process from emergence of united Europe ideas until the establishmentof the current EU was explained. In the same chapter, the information regarding the subunits of EU, their duties and roles undertaken during the enlargement process was given. In the third chapter, the general political situation in the Balkan region in the post-Cold War period as well as the agendas of Romania and Bulgaria in domestic and foreign politics were mentioned. In the fourth chapter, the relations with the EU and the diplomatic process that took place until 2007, when they were granted two full membership rights, were given. Furthermore, the reforms implemented by the countries in the political and economic fields in line with the EU membership criteria were examined through the reports of the European Commission. In conclusion, what extent the countries can fulfill the required criteria for EU membership in the process and EU's priorities for membership through the integration of these countries were analyzed.
